The film begins with Major General Amarjeet Singh (Amitabh Bachchan), a veteran of the 1971 Indo-Pak war, who loses his son Vikramjeet Singh (Bobby Deol), a naval officer, in a submarine attack by the Pakistani forces. Years later, his grandson Kunaljeet Singh (Bobby Deol) joins the army as a captain, but he is not interested in serving the nation and wants to settle in the US. He falls in love with Shweta Bhansali (Divya Khosla Kumar), a journalist, who is married to Major Rajeev Singh (Akshay Kumar), a brave and loyal officer who was presumed dead but was actually captured by the Pakistani terrorists.


Kunaljeet learns about his grandfather's and Rajeev's heroism and patriotism and decides to change his attitude. He joins Rajeev in a mission to stop the terrorists from bombing the Amarnath temple in Kashmir. In the climax, Kunaljeet sacrifices his life to save Rajeev and Shweta, while Rajeev kills the terrorist leader Sikandar Khan (Ashutosh Rana). Amarjeet salutes his grandson's martyrdom and expresses his pride in him.
