The Origin of Laila Majnu

The origin of Laila Majnu is shrouded in mystery and legend. Some sources claim that the story is based on a real historical couple who lived in the 7th century Arabia, during the Umayyad Caliphate. According to this version, Qays ibn al-Mulawwah was a poet from the Banu Amir tribe, who fell in love with Laila bint Mahdi, a noblewoman from the same tribe. However, their families opposed their marriage, and Laila was married off to another man. Qays became mad with grief and wandered the desert, composing verses in praise of his beloved. He eventually died of starvation or was killed by a lion, while Laila died of a broken heart.

Another version of the story traces its origin to a Persian poet named Nizami Ganjavi, who wrote an epic poem called Layla and Majnun in the 12th century. Nizami's version is more elaborate and romantic than the earlier one, and introduces many new characters and subplots. In Nizami's version, Qays and Laila are childhood friends who fall in love at school. However, their fathers are enemies, and Qays' father refuses to let him marry Laila. Qays becomes obsessed with Laila and earns the nickname Majnu (madman). He leaves his home and roams the wilderness, writing poetry for Laila. Laila's father marries her to a wealthy man named Ibn Salam, who tries to win her love but fails. Laila remains faithful to Majnu and secretly communicates with him through letters and messengers. Eventually, Majnu meets Laila in her tent, but they are discovered by Ibn Salam's men, who chase them away. Majnu fights them bravely but is wounded and falls unconscious. Laila nurses him back to health, but they are separated again by Ibn Salam's soldiers. Majnu returns to the desert, where he meets a mystic who guides him to spiritual enlightenment. Laila dies of sorrow in her husband's arms, and Majnu rushes to her grave, where he dies as well.

The Malayalam Version of Laila Majnu

The Malayalam version of Laila Majnu is based on Nizami's version of the story, but with some modifications and additions. The Malayalam version was written by Kottayam Pushpanath, a popular writer of detective novels and thrillers. Pushpanath published his version of Laila Majnu in 1976 as a serial novel in a weekly magazine called Manorajyam. The novel was later compiled into a book and became a bestseller.

The Malayalam version of Laila Majnu follows the same plot as Nizami's version, but adds some elements of suspense, action, and adventure. For example, Pushpanath introduces a character named Zainab, who is Laila's cousin and rival in love. Zainab tries to sabotage Laila and Majnu's relationship by spreading rumors and creating misunderstandings. She also hires assassins to kill Majnu and kidnaps Laila to force her to marry her brother. Pushpanath also adds some scenes of war and violence between the rival tribes of Qays and Laila. He also gives more details about the mystic who helps Majnu attain spiritual wisdom.

The Malayalam version of Laila Majnu is written in a simple and engaging style that appeals to a wide range of readers. The novel captures the emotions and passions of the lovers, as well as the challenges and obstacles they face. The novel also explores the themes of love, loyalty, sacrifice, faith, and destiny.
