Qays was heartbroken and left his home, wandering in the desert and reciting his verses. He eventually died of grief and loneliness. Layla also died soon after, unable to bear the separation from her beloved.

The Plot of Laila Majnu

The story of Laila Majnu has been retold by many poets and writers over the centuries, with some variations and embellishments. One of the most famous versions is by the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi, who wrote it in the 12th century. His version is divided into five chapters: The Birth of Layla and Majnun, The Madness of Majnun, The Exile of Majnun, The Meeting of Layla and Majnun, and The Death of Layla and Majnun.

In Nizami's version, Qays and Layla meet as children in school and fall in love. They exchange letters and poems secretly, but their affair is discovered by their families. Qays' father tries to persuade Layla's father to agree to their marriage, but he refuses. Qays becomes mad with love and roams the wilderness, attracting wild animals and other admirers. He is shunned by his tribe and mocked by his rivals.

Layla is married off to Ibn Salam, a wealthy merchant who loves her but cannot win her heart. She remains faithful to Qays in her mind and soul. She sends him messages through her maid and a mutual friend, Zayd. She also visits him in the desert with Zayd's help, but they never touch or embrace. They only talk about their love and sufferings.

One day, Ibn Salam learns about Layla's visits to Qays and becomes jealous. He plots to kill Qays with his men, but they are scared away by a lion that guards Qays. Ibn Salam then decides to poison Layla, but she senses his evil intention and refuses to eat or drink anything from him. She falls ill and dies of a broken heart. Qays hears about her death and rushes to her grave. He weeps over her tombstone and dies beside her.
